India’s Wind Energy Capacity To Double In 5 Years, Meet 60 Gigawatts Target, Says Industry Giant

The future of Indian wind energy sector remains bright and is expected to easily achieve the installed capacity targets announced by the government by 2022, chairman of one of the leading wind energy companies in India has stated.

Tulsi Tanti, Chairman-Suzlon Group, recently stated that India’s wind energy capacity would nearly double from current 32 gigawatts to 60 gigawatts over the next five years. The Indian government has set a target for 60 gigawatts operational wind energy capacity by March 2022.

A record 5,400 megawatts wind energy capacity was added in India in financial year 2016-17. The capacity addition beat target of 4,000 megawatts by an impressive 35%. India added 3,423 megawatts wind energy capacity in 2015-16 against a target of 2,400 megawatts.

Wind energy capacity addition remained concentrated to a few states and is expected remain so over the next few years as well. The states of Andhra Pradesh (2,190 megawatts), Gujarat (1,275 megawatts) and Karnataka (882 megawatts) dominated the capacity addition. These figures may change as the ministry continues to compile the final capacity addition numbers.

Between April 2016 and February 2017, a total of 2,374 megawatts of wind energy capacity was added. In March 2017 alone the capacity addition jumped to 3,026 megawatts.

For financial year 2017-18, the Indian Wind Turbine Manufacturers’ Association (IWTMA) has forecasted a capacity addition of 6,000 megawatts, against a target of 4,500 megawatts.

Canadian Solar Signs 80 Megawatts Solar PPA In India

Chinese solar panel manufacturer Canadian Solar has announced that it signed a power purchase agreement in India for the sale of electricity generated from a large-scale project.

Canadian Solar secured rights to develop an 80 megawatt solar power project in a competitive auction organised by the Solar Energy Corporation of India. The project will come up in the western state of Maharashtra.

The project was part of an auction that allocated a total of 450 megawatt capacity through viability gap funding mode.

In viability gap funding the government offers financial support to bidders for setting up projects. Canadian Solar is eligible to Rs 4.43/kWh tariff for a period of 25 years. The company will also receive $30,379 per megawatt support for the project.

Shawn Qu, chairman and chief executive of Canadian Solar, said: “We are pleased to secure our first 80MW(ac) of solar power projects with SECI, a bankable and reputable off-taker operating under the Government of India. This investment adds to our India pipeline that stands at 110MW(ac) and represents a significant milestone for Canadian Solar in one of world’s fastest growing renewables markets.”

Apart from developing its power projects Canadian Solar also owns stake in two solar power projects of 15 megawatt capacity each in Telangana. The projects are being developed by Suzlon Energy which also secured the projects in competitive auction.

Suzlon Energy Now Controls 10 Gigawatts Of Wind Energy Capacity In India

Perhaps the largest renewable energy company in India has announced achievement of a huge milestone.

Suzlon Energy, an integrated wind energy solutions provider, last month announced that it now controls 20 gigawatts of operational wind energy capacity in India.

This capacity gives Suzlon an overall share of 35% in India’s total wind energy capacity and 22% of India’s renewable energy capacity.

Suzlon Energy services and operates several of these projects on behalf of its customers that give the company a free hand in managing the projects from site identification to commissioning and operations.

The 10,000 megawatts capacity is installed in the form of more than 7,500 wind turbines. The capacity, Suzlon claims, is sufficient to power more than 5 million households and offset around 21.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year.

Once the leading original equipment manufacturer in the Indian wind energy market, Suzlon progressively lost market share to Gamesa. The Spanish turbine manufacturer has been the leading OEM in India for the last three years now.

In June last year, Suzlon Energy Chairman Tulsi Tanti, while interacting with an Indian media outlet, said that the company plans to increase market share in the Indian wind energy market to 40% this financial year, up from 26% in the previous financial year.

The company seems to be exulting such confidence after it financial position improved significant in the last quarter of previous financial year. The company reported its first profit in three and a half years in the quarter ending March 2016.

Suzlon entered the solar power market winning 210 megawatts capacity in competitive auctions. The company also opened a new blade manufacturing facility in the state of Madhya Pradesh.

Suzlon Energy Wins 226.8 Megawatts Wind Energy Order In India

Even as uncertainty over the extension of some crucial financial and tax incentives for the wind energy sector in India remains, Suzlon Energy has secured one of the largest orders in recent times.

One of the India’s largest integrated wind energy solutions provider – Suzlon Energy – recently announced that it received an order to supply 226.8 megawatts of wind energy turbines to an independent power producer.

The wind energy project will come up at Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh in the southern India. The district is a hotbed of renewable energy activity with several solar power projects coming up under the state as well as central government policies.

Suzlon Energy and the project developer will push hard to meet a possible deadline for expiration of the accelerated depreciation and generation-based incentive on 31 March 2017.

Suzlon Energy shall supply 108 units of S111 2.1 megawatt turbine for the project. The company has entered into an exclusive Supply and Installation Agreement (SIA) and Engineering and Construction of the project. The company would also be responsible for operation and maintenance services with dedicated life cycle asset management services for an initial period of 10 years.

The project will generate enough electricity to meet the annual demand of 120,000 households and offset almost half a million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.

1.1 GW Solar PPAs To Be Signed Soon In India

One of India’s largest solar power tender will finally see fruition as power purchase agreements are expected to be signed soon.

According to media reports, project developers that secured rights to develop more than 1 GW of utility-scale solar power projects in the eastern state of Jharkhand are expected to sign power purchase agreements soon.

The state government of Jharkhand had announced results of the bidding in March this year, however, the PPA could not finalised and signed as per schedule due to differences between the utilities and project developers over tariff bids.

Tariff bids placed by successful project developers range between Rs 5.08/kWh (US¢7.5/kWh) and Rs 7.95/kWh (US¢12.0/kWh). These are significantly higher than the lowest bid by Fortum Group placed for a project in Rajasthan earlier this year. The 70 MW project was secured by Fortum at Rs 4.34/kWh (US¢6.4/kWh).

The 1.2 GW tender was offered in two categories – 200 MW for projects up to 25 MW capacity and 1 GW for 26 MW to 50 MW capacity.

According to reports, ReNew Solar Power was the largest winner and secured 522 MW capacity across the two categories in a tariff range of Rs 5.08/kWh (US¢7.5/kWh) and Rs 5.55/kWh (US¢8.2/kWh). Adani Green Energy secured 10 projects of 50 MW capacity each in a tariff range of Rs 5.45/kWh (US¢8.0/kWh)and Rs 6.05/kWh (US¢8.9/kWh).

Suzlon Energy, a well-known name in the wind energy market and having recently entered the solar power market, secured rights develop 325 MW through 8 projects. Essel Green Energy secured 300 MW capacity projects; ACME Solar Holdings 225 MW capacity; SunEdison 200 MW capacity; and Hero Solar Energy 175 MW.

India To Get Offshore Wind Energy Within 5 Years

India’s first offshore wind energy project could be operation in a period of three to five years, an international renewable energy group has stated.

Officials of the DNV GL group recently stated that commercial operations of offshore wind energy projects would start in India over the next three to five years. Group Executive Vice President and Regional Manager Mathias Steck stated that his company is working with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy to prepare a roadmap for the development of offshore wind energy market in India.

Development of offshore wind energy in India is being funded by the Facilitating Offshore Wind in Industry (FOWIND) programme sponsored by the European Union. FOWIND has done several reports on offshore wind energy potential in the states of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu.

A 100 MW pilot offshore wind energy project is expected to be operational in about three years.

In 2015, the Indian Government approved its new national offshore wind energy policy to promote and streamline the process of implementing offshore wind energy projects. As per the policy, the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) will be the nodal agency for implementation of wind energy projects, while the National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE) will be responsible for allocating project sites.

Apart from a pilot project backed by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, private company Suzlon Energy is also working on a 600 MW offshore wind energy project in Gujarat.

The ministry had also announced plans to issue tender and hold competitive auction to allocate project sites this year, however, no such activity has so far been seen from the government.

Suzlon Energy Commissions New Blade Facility In India

One of India’s leading integrated wind energy companies, Suzlon Energy, has just commissioned a new manufacturing facility for wind turbine blades.

The new facility is located in the state of Madhya Pradesh and shall produce blades for the company’s new turbine – S111 2.1 MW. The unit is spread across 19 acres and has an annual production capacity of 400 MW.

The S111 2.1 MW turbines are designed specifically to boost power generation at low wind speed sites. With a blade diameter of 54.8 meters it is the largest rotor diameter wind turbine available in India.

Suzlon Energy already operates 14 manufacturing facilities across India, including 7 blade manufacturing units.

The new manufacturing facility come online with just 4 months to go for the government to significantly reduce the financial incentives like accelerated depreciation and generation-based incentives for the renewable energy sector. These two incentives have been the driving force behind the sharp increase in wind energy capacity addition in the country over the last few years.

The new facility suggests that Suzlon Energy is quite optimistic about the government’s announcement to introduce competitive auctions in the wind energy sector. This would reduce the landed cost of power generated from wind projects, which is now at a premium to solar power tariffs in some states.

Canadian Solar Enters Indian Solar Power Market

One of the largest solar power companies in the world, Canadian Solar, has entered one of the fastest growing solar power markets – India.

Listed at Bombay Stock Exchange, Suzlon Energy recently reported that it sold 49% equity stake each in two solar power projects to Canadian Solar. The projects, each with 15 MW installed capacity, are located in the southern state of Telangana.

Suzlon Energy also sold 49% stake in another 15 MW solar power project to Shanghai-based Unisun Energy. Both, Canadian Solar and Unisun Energy, shall have the right to acquire the balance 51% stake in the projects.

Canadian Solar acquired the equity stake through its Singapore-based arm. It shall also be responsible for arranging debt funding for the projects. The projects are expected to be commissioned in the next financial year.

Suzlon Energy secured rights to develop solar power projects in Telangana through competitive auction. The company shall develop a total of 210 MW capacity – one project each of capacity 100 MW and 50 MW and four projects of 15 MW capacity each.

Earlier this year, the company also sold 49% stake in the 100 MW project to CLP India. Suzlon Energy is likely to construct, commission, operate and maintain the power project. CLP India will have the option to fully buyout Suzlon’s stake after 1 year of project commissioning.

Suzlon Energy Wins Repeat Wind Energy Order Of 132 MW From ReNew Power

One of India’s largest renewable energy solution providers Suzlon Energy has received repeat order from Independent Power Producer ReNew Power Limited for 132 MW wind farm in Andhra Pradesh.

The contract signed with ReNew Power is for the supply of 48 units of S97 turbines with 90-metre tubular towers and 15 units of S97 with 120-metre hybrid towers. The rated capacity of each machine is 2.1 MW. In addition, Suzlon will provide a comprehensive range of services and dedicated life cycle asset management services for the wind farm for the first 12 years.

According to the statement issued by Suzlon Group, the project is capable of providing power to over 70,000 households and would off-take 0.28 million tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum. The expected commissioning of the project is by March 2017.

ReNew Power is one of the leading customers of Suzlon and both have worked together on over 510 MW of projects spanning across the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh. ReNew Power has 220 MW of wind projects in pipeline in Andhra Pradesh.

Suzlon’s shares rose by nearly 2% after receiving this repeat order from ReNew Power. Suzlon was struggling with huge debt for the past few years, however, repeat orders like this would improve company’s condition and would help to regain stakeholder’s interest in once called India’s largest wind turbine manufacturing company.

CLP India Enters Solar Power Market Through Joint Venture With Suzlon Energy

CLP India, after long presence in the conventional power market, has finally entered the most rapidly growing renewable energy market in India.

Suzlon Energy, one of the leading renewable energy companies in India, recently confirmed sale of 49% stake in a 100 MW solar power project to CLP India. The project is located in the southern state of Telangana and was secured by a special purpose vehicle of Suzlon Energy – SE Solar – through competitive bidding.

Suzlon Energy is likely to construct, commission, operate and maintain the power project. CLP India will have the option to fully buyout Suzlon’s stake after 1 year of project commissioning.

Suzlon Energy emerged as one of the largest successful bidder in what was India’s single largest solar power tender. State authorities in the southern Indian state of Telangana announced results of the 2 GW solar power tender in August last year, wherein Suzlon Energy secured 210 MW capacity in the competitive auction.

Apart from the 100 MW project, Suzlon Energy will also set up a project of 50 MW and 4 projects of 15 MW capacity each.

Power generated from the 100 MW project will be sold through a 25-year power purchase agreement to Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited at a tariff of Rs 5.59/kWh (US¢8.4/kWh).

CLP India owns almost 2 GW of thermal power projects in India and an additional 1 GW wind energy capacity. The company has also signed an agreement with the state government of Haryana to set up 132 MW solar power project one of its thermal power projects.

Suzlon Energy Eyes Leadership In Indian Wind Energy Market

After making significant improvement in the financials India’s Suzlon Energy is looking to increase its market share substantially and take back the leadership position.

Suzlon Energy Chairman Tulsi Tanti, while interacting with an Indian media outlet, said that the company plans to increase market share in the Indian wind energy market to 40% this financial year, up from 26% in the previous financial year.

Suzlon Energy, once the leader in India’s wind energy market, lost its sheen following an expensive acquisition of Europe’s offshore wind energy company REpower (later named Senvion) in 2009. Suzlon sold the company last year.

Suzlon lost significant market share to emerging companies in the sector like Gamesa India and Inox Wind. Gamesa India has been leading wind turbine manufacturer for the last 3 years.

The Indian government has set a target to have 60 GW operational wind energy capacity by March 2022. Suzlon Energy may thus be looking to take a significant share in the upcoming capacity addition. The company installed a fourth of the 3.4 GW installed last financial year. It expects to increase this share to 40% with total estimated capacity installation of 4.4 GW in this financial year.

Indian Companies Dominate 1.2 GW Solar Power Tender In Jharkhand

Results are in for the first solar power auction in the east Indian state of Jharkhand. The solar power tariffs quoted by the project developers are slightly higher than what have been seen in the recent auctions but it does give some breathing space to developers who are concerned about the financial viability of their projects.

The government of Jharkhand had floated a tender for 1.2 GW of solar PV projects; the results were announced earlier this month. Tariff bids placed by successful project developers range between Rs 5.08/kWh (US¢7.5/kWh) and Rs 7.95/kWh (US¢12.0/kWh). These are significantly higher than the lowest bid by Fortum Group placed for a project in Rajasthan earlier this year. The 70 MW project was secured by Fortum at Rs 4.34/kWh (US¢6.4/kWh).

The 1.2 GW tender was offered in two categories – 200 MW for projects up to 25 MW capacity and 1 GW for 26 MW to 50 MW capacity.

Market observers note that since this was the first tender from the state of Jharkhand this premium in the tariff bids is justified. Tariffs in Rajasthan, and some southern states, have traditionally been lower due to low cost of land and easier access to transmission network.

While ambiguity over the total capacity allocated to project developers remains, lists of project developers that participated and secured projects are available with some publications. According to reports, ReNew Solar Power was the largest winner and secured 522 MW capacity across the two categories in a tariff range of Rs 5.08/kWh (US¢7.5/kWh) and Rs 5.55/kWh (US¢8.2/kWh).
