Leading wind turbine manufacturer in India – Gamesa – is looking to sharply increase its manufacturing capabilities in the country.
Gamesa India is working to set up a blade factory at Nellore in the south Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. The new facility will have production capacity of blades worth 500 MW every year. The blades shall be used in the G114-2.0 MW turbine model. The factory is expected to be operational by September and shall employ 400 people.
In addition to the facility under construction, Gamesa India has 3 other manufacturing facilities across the country. Another blade factory is located in Gujarat, a nacelle factory and a repair centre is situated in Tamil Nadu.
Gamesa India has seen very healthy inflow of orders over the last few years. This has helped the company secure top position among all turbine manufacturers in India for the last 3 years. In 2015, the company held 34% market share in the Indian wind energy market. Gamesa commissioned 1 GW of the 3.4 GW wind energy capacity installed in financial year 2015-16.
Gamesa is bullish on India’s renewable energy story. India plans to increase the installed wind energy capacity by almost 3 times by 2022 to 60 GW. The company has also entered the solar power market in India. As an EPC contractor, it commissioned its first solar power project (10 MW) in the state of Tamil Nadu last year. The company subsequently secured 3 more EPC orders for 23 MW solar PV projects.
