Subway Supplier Goes Solar

Southwest Baking, supplier of dough to Subway stores in Arizona, Nevada, Hawaii, and Southern California will be adding a 300 kilowatt solar energy system at its facility in Tolleson, Arizona.

According to the Phoenix Business Journal, the solar energy system will be a ground mounted system and is estimated to produce approximately 480,000 kilowatt hours of power annually.

This is only the latest step by Subway and its suppliers to green the supply chain. According to a report in 2009, Subway had cut its carbon emissions by over 120,000 metric tons since 2006 and reduced its oil consumption by 277,000 barrels annually.

The company’s restaurants also use 100 percent recycled napkins, towel, and tissue products. Restaurants are also being equipped with mops made of 100 percent recycled materials.

According to Elizabeth Stewart, Subway’s director of corporate social responsibility, “being a healthy company is about more than just food; it’s about operating in an environmentally responsible manner.”
