NEXTracker To Set Up Manufacturing Facility In India

US-based solar tracker manufacturer NEXTracker will have a manufacturing facility in India operational over the next six months in an attempt to grab a share in the rapidly expanding solar power market in the country.

NEXTracker will set up a manufacturing facility in the northern part of India over the next six months, NEXTracker Vice President Emerging Markets Nava Akkineni told media personnel recently. The company boasts 15-20% increase in efficiency in solar power generation following installation of its trackers.

The company has already signed deals and agreements with local firms to supply trackers for 1 gigawatts of solar power capacity. These orders are expected to be completed this year.

NEXTracker’s decision to set up a local manufacturing unit in India comes at the right time as the country’s solar power market is set for an exponential growth over the next few years. The company believes that the solar tracker market would increase from 7% in 2016 to 31% in 2021 with the massive push for large-scale project in India.

NEXTracker may receive support from the government under the Make In India program as well as special incentives planned for manufacturers of solar power modules and equipment. As per a draft plan discussed by the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy last year, the government is looking to offer direct subsidies to manufacturers, be it Indian or foreign, willing to set up manufacturing units in the country. The subsidies could be in the form interest subvention or cheaper loans.

The largest tracker-equipped solar power project in India hosts equipment supplied by NEXTracker. The 105 megawatts project was recently commissioned by Adani Power in the northern state of Punjab.

India’s Adani Power Looking To Enter Bangladesh Solar Market

One of India’s leading solar power project developers – Adani Power – is looking to enter the nascent solar power market of Bangladesh.

Adani Power’s Chief Executive Officer for renewable energy told media outlets that his company is keen to develop solar power projects in Bangladesh; the idea, however, is still in the conceptual stage. If Adani indeed decides to enter the Bangladesh market it shall have an early mover advantage as utility-scale solar market in the country is practically non-existent.

Adani Green Energy operates the largest solar power project in India. The company commissioned 648 MW solar power project few months back in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

Adani Enterprises, the parent company of Adani Green Energy, is looking to set up end-to-end solutions in the solar power market.

Adani Enterprises recently stated that it plans to begin the construction of phase one of the planned 2 GW solar equipment manufacturing factory this year. The first phase is expected to be operationalised by March 2017 and will have production capacity of 1.2 GW; a second phase is expected to be operational by June 2017 increasing the production capacity to 2 GW. The planned facility will produce polysilicon, wafers, solar cells and modules.

In-house manufacturing of solar power modules would enable the company to expand its solar power generation activities outside of India. Recently, the company announced plans to set up 1 GW solar power capacity in Australia where it operates a large coal mining project.

Adani Working On India’s Largest Tracker-based Solar Power Project

Adani Green Energy has reported progress on the development of what will be the largest tracker-based solar power project in India.

Adani Green Energy is setting up a 105 MW solar power project in the northern state of Punjab. The company had secured the project through competitive bidding under the state’s solar power policy. The project will use trackers provided by NEXTracker.

NEXTracker recently delivered the trackers to the project site. According to a press release issued by NEXTracker, this association marks only the first phase of engaged with Adani Green Energy. The Indian project developer has pledged to add 10 GW solar power capacity by March 2022; this constitutes 10% of the planned operational solar power capacity in the country at that time.

Adani Green Energy has a very ambitious expansion plan in the Indian solar power market. The company has been aggressively participating in the solar power auctions around the country and has also signed agreements with state governments to set up large-scale solar power parks directly.

Additionally, the company is also planning to set up perhaps the largest solar power equipment manufacturing unit in the western state of Gujarat. First phase of the unit is expected to be operationalised by March 2017 and will have production capacity of 1.2 GW; a second phase is expected to be operational by June 2017 increasing the production capacity to 2 GW.

Adani To Begin Production At 1.2 GW Solar Modules Factory By March 2017

One of India’s leading industrial conglomerates – Adani Enterprises – is scheduled to being construction of its solar module manufacturing unit later this year.

The planned facility will produce polysilicon, wafers, solar cells and modules. Adani had last year signed an agreement with SunEdison to set up the largest solar module manufacturing facility in India. The two companies had agreed to invest $4 billion on the project.

Recent media reports has stated of a third phase for the production facility. The company will reportedly start polysilicon production upto 10,000 tonnes in the third phase.

Modules manufactured at the facility are likely to be absorbed in the company’s own projects and may be sold to other developers in the country and even sold to other markets. Adani Enterprises signed an agreement with the government of Rajasthan to set up 10 GW solar power park.

Last month, Adani Enterprises submitted an application with the Ministry of Environment and Forest for approval to set up 1 million tonne/year copper smelter. While the company did not specify the purpose of setting up the venture, media outlets quotes unnamed sources saying that the copper smelter would feed into the company’s solar module manufacturing units.

India’s Largest Solar Power Park (360 MW) Starts Feeding To The Grid

A part of India’s largest solar power park is now operational in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

ABB India has announced that it commissioned 5 substations to connect 648 MW solar power park to the national grid. The park is being developed by Adani Group. Of the total 648 MW capacity, 360 MW has now been connected to the grid.

Even with this partial commissioning the park has become the largest solar power park in India. India’s first solar power park, which includes smaller projects from various project developers, is located in Charanka district, Gujarat. The current capacity of Charanka power plant stands at 345 MW.

The Kamuthi solar power park in Tamil Nadu will be spread across 5 different solar power projects. Power generated from park will be sold to Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation through a long-term power purchase agreement with duration of 25 years. Adani Group had signed a memorandum of understanding with the government of Tamil Nadu to set up the solar power park in 2015.

The power is expected to be sold at Rs 7.01/kWh (US¢10.0/kWh) which represents a huge premium to the tariffs discovered in the recently concluded solar power auctions. Bids by Indian project developers seem to have stabilised around Rs 4.70/kWh (US$7.00/kWh).

Adani Group has announced very ambitious plans to set up large solar power projects. The company entered into an agreement with the state government of Rajasthan to set up a 10 GW solar power park, with the entire capacity expected to be based on photovoltaic technology. Adani Green Energy also confirmed interest in acquiring SunEdison India’s projects.

SunEdison Reportedly Planning To Sell 1.5 GW Of Indian Renewable Energy Assets

SunEdison may be planning to a larger portion of India renewable energy projects pipeline in order to fight the huge debt on its balance sheet.

According to Indian media reports, SunEdison may be planning to offload its 1,490 MW assets in India. Initial discussions with Macquaire Capital have fallen through and now two Indian companies have entered negotiations with the US-based project developer.

SunEdison reportedly has 410 MW of operational solar power capacity India while an additional 1,000 MW capacity is at various stages of development. The company also owns 80 MW of wind energy capacity, acquired from another foreign developer.

The 1,000 MW under-development capacity also includes the 500 MW project SunEdison had won in Andhra Pradesh auction. The project is among the cheapest projects in India, in terms of tariff. Media outlets had earlier reported that the company is looking to sell up to 49% equity stake in the project.

The latest plans to offload Indian assets come just months after the company sold 425 MW capacity to its yieldco TerraForm Global for $231 million to retire some debt from the balance sheet.

SunEdison has had dealings with both the Indian companies said to be in negotiations to acquire the renewable energy assets. A subsidiary of Tata Power had last year signed a 180 MW power purchase agreement with a SunEdison project in Madhya Pradesh.

SunEdison and Adani Power had once announced plans to jointly develop India’s largest solar modules manufacturing facility at a cost of $4 billion. The current status and future of the facility remains unknown.

SunEdison’s financial condition seems grim to say the least. The company is looking to sell assets as fast as it once acquired several others few years back, which, perhaps, is the root cause of all the trouble.
