JA Solar To Supply 300 Megawatts Solar Modules To Enel’s Brazil Projects

China-based solar modules manufacturer JA Solar has secured order to supply solar power projects being developed by Enel Green Power located in Brazil.

According to media reports, the Chinese manufacturer will supply 300 megawatts of solar power modules for installation at Enel Green Power’s projects that the later secured through competitive auctions in Brazil.

It was not immediately clear at which project these modules would be installed. Perhaps they would form part of the largest solar power project in South America. Enel Green Power Brasil Participações is working on a 292 megawatts solar power project at Piaui.

The company recently announced that it will procure single-axis trackers for installation at the power plant from Soltec. Enel started construction of the Piaui solar power project last year. The project is expected to require a total investment of $300 million and generate more than 600 gigawatt-hours electricity annually. The project is expected to be operational by the second half of this year.

Enel already operates an 11 megawatts solar power project in Brazil and is also working on a 254 megawatts project. Together, these three projects will have a combined installed capacity of more than 550 megawatts. Enel has entered long-term agreements for sale of electricity from all these projects.

Canadian Solar, Flextronics Plan 350 MW Solar Panel Factory In Brazil

Yet another solar panels manufacturing facility has been accounted to cater to the demands of a rapidly growing Brazilian solar power market.

Canadian Solar and Flextronics have announced plans to jointly develop a 350 MW solar modules manufacturing facility in Brazil. The factory is expected to come up at Sorocaba, São Paulo and is expected to start production later this year.

The facility can be expected to supply panels to projects being developed by other companies apart from the ones secured by Canadian Solar itself. The company is reportedly working on solar power projects with 384 MW cumulative capacity. These projects were secured through competitive auctions held by the Brazilian government over the next last few years.

Brazil has already allocated large capacity of solar power capacity and plans to auction several more projects in the near future.

Five states in Brazil had recently accredited more than 200 solar power projects with a combined capacity of more than 9.2 GW. Following the accreditation, the projects will become eligible for participation in the renewable energy auction scheduled for July 29.

The auction will be the fourth in a series of auctions that started in 2014. During the first three auctions, about 2 GW of solar power capacity was selected.

Brazil’s rapidly expanding solar power market has attracted several module manufacturers and investors. Swiss module maker EcoSolifer AG had announced plans to set up factory with 80 MW annual production capacity. Another Chinese company, BYD, had also announced plans to set up a manufacturing facility to cater to the demand for panels from utility-scale as well as rooftop solar power systems.

Over 9 GW Projects In Race For Brazil Solar Power Auction

Brazil is getting ready for its fourth renewable energy auction and has received interest from a large number of solar power project developers.

According to media reports, 5 states in Brazil have accredited more than 200 solar power projects with combined capacity of over 9.2 GW. Following the accreditation, the projects are believed to have become eligible for participation in the renewable energy auction scheduled for 29 July.

The auction will be the fourth one in the series of auctions that started in 2014. During the first 3 auctions around 2 GW of solar power capacity was selected.

In an auction held November 2015, just under 1 GW solar power capacity was auctioned at an average price of US¢7.75/kWh which was below the ceiling price. Similarly, in the solar-only auction held in August 2015 saw auction of 800 MW capacity at US¢8.42/kWh.

The tariff bids were very similar to the bids seen in the Indian solar power market where several recent auctions yielded bids of around US¢7.00/kWh. It will be interesting to see if bids in the July auction fall further. A total of 133 hydro power projects with combined generation capacity of 985 MW have also been accredited for the July auction.

Few months back the Brazilian government doubled its solar power capacity addition target for 2024. Under the 10-year Energy Plan for 2024, the government announced target to have 7 GW of utility-scale and 1.32 GW of distributed solar power capacity.
