JA Solar Module Shipments To India Cross 1,000 Megawatts

JA Solar Module Shipments To India Cross 1,000 Megawatts

written by saurabh

Chinese solar modules manufacturer JA Solar has achieved an important milestone in one of the fastest growing solar power markets in the world.

JA Solar recently announced that it has achieved 1,000 megawatts of cumulative solar modules shipments in India. The company estimates that these shipments represent 1.7 billion kWh of electricity generation and 1.47 million tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions offsets.

The company saw a sharp jump in shipments to India in 2016 as well as first quarter of 2017. These claims are in line with the sharp jump in capacity addition in India. Chinese solar module manufacturers have always commanded a majority share in solar module imports in India. China-made modules have gained spotlight over the last few months as the government and government-owned companies have launched tenders of several hundreds of megawatts garnering record-low tariff bids from modules.

In FY2013-14, of all the solar power modules imported into India 65% were from Chinese manufacturers. This figure increased to 70% in the subsequent financial year. Foreign companies have benefitted from Indian government’s policy not to impose anti-dumping duties on imported solar power modules.

The rapid increase in solar power capacity in India has benefitted other foreign manufacturers as well. Last year, First Solar announced that its cumulative solar power module shipment to India has crossed 1 GW and it has become the first thin-film solar panel manufacturer to achieve this feat. Chinese manufacturer ReneSola also announced that it expected shipment of more than 1,000 megawatts to India in FY2016-17.

JA Solar may also be looking to set up module manufacturing units in India. In 2015 the company entered an agreement with Essel Group to to set up a manufacturing facility for solar cells and modules. The facility will have an annual production capacity of 500 MW worth of solar cells and modules every year. The joint venture will invest an estimated $150 million in the production company, of which about $30 to 45 million will be equity funding.

JA Solar To Supply 300 Megawatts Solar Modules To Enel’s Brazil Projects

JA Solar To Supply 300 Megawatts Solar Modules To Enel’s Brazil Projects

written by saurabh

China-based solar modules manufacturer JA Solar has secured order to supply solar power projects being developed by Enel Green Power located in Brazil.

According to media reports, the Chinese manufacturer will supply 300 megawatts of solar power modules for installation at Enel Green Power’s projects that the later secured through competitive auctions in Brazil.

It was not immediately clear at which project these modules would be installed. Perhaps they would form part of the largest solar power project in South America. Enel Green Power Brasil Participações is working on a 292 megawatts solar power project at Piaui.

The company recently announced that it will procure single-axis trackers for installation at the power plant from Soltec. Enel started construction of the Piaui solar power project last year. The project is expected to require a total investment of $300 million and generate more than 600 gigawatt-hours electricity annually. The project is expected to be operational by the second half of this year.

Enel already operates an 11 megawatts solar power project in Brazil and is also working on a 254 megawatts project. Together, these three projects will have a combined installed capacity of more than 550 megawatts. Enel has entered long-term agreements for sale of electricity from all these projects.

JA Solar Will Supply 420 MW Modules For Solar Power Technology Demonstrator

JA Solar Will Supply 420 MW Modules For Solar Power Technology Demonstrator

written by saurabh

One of the world’s leading solar photovoltaic modules manufacturer JA Solar will also be a major participant in a technology demonstration project being undertaken by the Chinese government.

Last month, JA Solar announced that it will supply 420 MW of solar PV modules for the ‘Front Runner’ programme – a technology demonstrator launched by the Chinese government to promote the development of advanced solar PV technology.

According to a press release issued by the Nasdaq-listed company, the first phase of the this programme shall see installation of 950 MW capacity, thus putting JA Solar’s share at 44%.

The first phase consists of a GW-scale solar power capacity which shall include 13 individual solar power projects. The solar power park shall be located in Datong, Shanxi province. With a total investment of $1.6 billion, the park is expected to generate 1.5 billion kWh of electricity and offset 480,000 tons of coal consumption every year.

JA Solar will be one of the investors and developers of the individual projects in the solar power park and will use 50 MW modules. The balance 370 MW panels will be supplied to 6 companies that will also develop projects within the solar power park; these include the likes of China Three Gorges Corporation, China Huadian Corporation, China Power Investment Corporation, and China Guangdong Nuclear Power Group.

The National Energy Administration in China has set high standards for the use of modules in the ‘Front Runner’ programme. Among the various technical parameters the modules must meet is that the conversion efficiency of polycrystalline and monocrystalline modules must exceed 16.5% and 17%, respectively.
