Philippines Approves 30 Megawatts Solar-Storage Project To Assess Grid Impact

More developing markets are now considering storage solutions for better and efficient integration of solar power projects into the existing grid.

The Department of Energy in Philippines recently approved four large-scale solar power projects to assess the impact of their integration into the existing transmission network. These projects include two of 70 megawatts capacity each, one of 22 megawatts and another of 30 megawatts with battery storage.

The two projects of 70 megawatts capacity each will be developed by Pilipinas Newton Energy and Pilipinas Einstein Energy in San Manuel in the province of Pangasinan. C-Solar Power will develop 22 megawatt project in Tarlac. Battery-based solar power project with capacity of 30 megawatts will be developed by Silay Global Energy Solutions in Negros Occidental.

These projects are expected to play an important role developing a roadmap for large-scale integration of not only solar power but projects based on other renewable energy technologies as well. Absorption of renewable energy technologies into existing transmission grid remains a major challenge across all developing markets, be it India, Chile or China.

In March, the Department of Energy also approved a 150 megawatts solar power projects equipped with storage technology, based on batteries, for development in Concepcion. The project will be developed by Solar Philippines and will consist of nearly half a million modules.

The Concepcion solar power project will initially sell electricity in the open market while continuing to negotiate with utilities for a long-term power purchase agreement.

After the Renewable Energy Law was approved in 2008 a surge in renewable energy capacity addition was seen in the Philippines. The government had announced a feed-in tariff scheme wherein projects were offered ¢0.21 per kWh. The tariff scheme attracted overwhelming response from project developers, forcing the government to expand the capacity under the program from 50 megawatt to 500 megawatt.

Chinese Company Planning 200 Megawatts Solar Project In Philippines

A Chinese company has expressed interest in setting up a massive solar power project in Philippines.

According to media reports, an unnamed Chinese firm plans to set up 200 megawatts solar power project in the Samar province of Philippines. Officials from the Chinese company are expected to visit the south-east Asian country soon to finalise plans about the project.

Government representatives and officials of local power company have pledged to help the country get regulatory approvals and land lease agreement. After getting all these approvals the company expects to start construction this year.

The planned 200 megawatts solar power project is expected to boost energy self-sufficiency for the Samar province which is overwhelmingly dependent on geothermal power. The project is also expected to help reduce cost of electricity in the province.

Philippines Commissions South-east Asia’s Largest Solar Power Project

Earlier this month the largest solar power project in South-east Asia was commissioned in the Philippines. The project is a clear demonstration of the fact that Philippines is a rapidly emerging solar power market in South-east Asia.

Two solar power projects with total installed capacity of 185 MW were commissioned in Philippines. This includes the largest project in South-east Asia – 135 MW project now operational at Cadiz. According to local media reports, the project has been established with a total investment of $200 million.

The project, apart from being the largest in the Philippines and South-east Asia, is also the 7th largest solar power project in the world. The project is expected to generate around 188,500 MWh every year, offsetting almost 95,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year.

The project is owned by real estate developer Gregorio Araneta and developed by Singapore-based Soleq.

Germany-based Conergy also commissioned a 50 MW project in the country this month. The project is expected to generate over 78,000 MWh every year enough to power 31,700 households.

After the Renewable Energy Law was approved in 2008 a surge in renewable energy capacity addition was seen in the Philippines. The government had announced a feed-in tariff scheme wherein projects were offered ¢0.21 per kWh. The tariff scheme attracted overwhelming response from project developers, forcing the government to expand the capacity under the program from 50 MW to 500 MW.

With these two new projects increased the total number of operational solar power projects in the country to 11 with total installed capacity of over 400 MW.
