China’s East Hope Partners India’s Adani For Solar Equipment Manufacturing

China’s East Hope Partners India’s Adani For Solar Equipment Manufacturing

written by saurabh

One of China’s largest industrial groups East Hope has announced partnership with Indian conglomerate Adani to set up solar equipment manufacturing units in India’s western state of Gujarat.

Representatives of the two companies recently signed a memorandum of understanding at the Indian Consulate in Shanghai. As per the agreement, East Hope would invest a total of $300 million to develop various facilities include solar equipment manufacturing, chemicals, and aluminium.

The Adani Group has reportedly already set up the largest solar modules and cell manufacturing facility to manufacture solar modules and cells. According to a disclosure made to the Ministry of New & Renewable Energy earlier this year,

Mundra Solar, part of the the Adani Group, has commissioned 1,200 megawatts of solar cell and 1,200 megawatts of solar module production line. As on 31 December 2016, the production lines are ready but actual production is yet to begin.

Adani’s solar equipment manufacturing venture had first attracted SunEdison. The two companies had agreed to invest $4 billion in the production facilities which were to become the largest in India. However, the agreement became null following bankruptcy of SunEdison.

Adani was supposed to initiate production at the Mundra Solar facilities by March this year, however, it is unclear if the company has actually started manufacturing any cells or modules.

East Hope Group would possibly bring to the table what SunEdison lacked in terms of manufacturing and production expertise. The company already operates silicon smelters and would aid Adani in its manufacturing plans.

Adani plans to set up a manufacturing facility to produce 1000 MWp/yr of Silicon Ingots/ wafers, Silicon Solar Cells, Modules along with 3000 MWp support manufacturing facilities that includes EVA, Back-sheet, Glass, Junction box and Solar cell and string interconnect ribbon in 3 phases.

The third phase of of Adani’s manufacturing plan would include polysilicon production upto 10,000 tonnes.

Adani has extensive plans for expansion in the Indian solar power market. A group subsidiary already operates the largest solar power project in India and regularly participates in auctions for solar power projects across the country. Having a Chinese partner may also smoothen Adani’s entry into the Chinese market which is significantly larger than the Indian one.

Vikram Solar, India-based solar module manufacturer has announced plans to expand its manufacturing capacity to 2 GW by 2019. The current manufacturing capacity of the company stands at 500 MW.

The company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with German Teamtechnik to support its expansion plans. Under the MoU, Teamtechnik will supply equipment for solar module production and put them into operation as well as train operations managers, process engineers and service technicians at Vikram Solar.

Both the companies are also planning to collaborate in the area of materials research, process optimization and production technology in future, with the intention of improving solar panel efficiencies while continuing to reduce module costs.

The company’s collaboration with Teamtechnik for module capacity expansion will further supplement its existing collaboration with Fraunhofer ISE, Meyer Burger and Centrotherm.

Vikarm Solar plans to invest over INR 400 crore (US$6.04 million) for the expansion plan and expected to generate more than 3,000 jobs.

Gyanesh Chaudhary, MD & CEO of Vikram Solar said, “We are very happy to work with Teamtechnik. Their solutions have been shown to facilitate production of highly efficient solar modules while keeping costs particularly low. Another key factor in our decision was that their production technology can be expanded in order to integrate highly efficient technologies such as PERC and bifacial cells into the production process.”

Vikram Solar is the only Indian solar module manufacturer to be listed in the Tier 1 PV module manufacturer rankings maintained by Bloomberg New Energy Finance. The company, earlier this year, announced that it expanded operations and services in 14 new markets in sub-Saharan Africa, including Botswana, Zimbabwe and Tanzania.

Chinese solar power module manufacturer JA Solar is planning yet another overseas factory as it looks to expand presence across emerging markets and bypass import restrictions in developed markets.

JA Solar Holdings has announced plans to set up its largest overseas solar modules manufacturing factory in Vietnam. The factory will be spread across 88 hectares at Quang Chau industrial zone. The company is expected to invest $1 billion to set up the factory.

The company already operates 8 factories across the Europe, the US and Japan. JA Solar, like several other module manufacturers, facing import restrictions and duties in developed markets like the US and Chinese. Several Chinese and Taiwanese companies have open factories in overseas locations to bypass these restrictions.

Thailand has recently emerged as one of the favourite location for many of these companies. Yingli Solar subsidiary Hainan Yingli New Energy Resource announced a joint venture with Demeter Power to set up a solar panel manufacturing facility in Thailand. Hainan Yingli New Energy Resource will invest $19 million in the joint venture and retain a 40% share in the joint venture. The facility is expected to be operation in the second half of this year.

Trina Solar will set up their manufacturing facility with an annual production capacity of 500 MW solar photovoltaic modules and 700 MW of solar cells. The facility is expected to be operational by early 2016. Zhongli Talesun will set up a manufacturing facility and also develop 1 GW of solar power projects over the next 3 years.

Taiwan-based Gintech Energy also announced $45 million investment to develop 350 MW solar cell production facility last year.

India’s Adani Enterprises Moving Ahead With Solar Module Manufacturing Venture

written by saurabh

With an aim to become one of the largest private sector power generation companies in India, Adani Enterprises is speeding ahead with plans to manufacture solar power modules.

According to media reports, Adani Enterprises, which controls Adani Power and Adani Green Energy, recently submitted an application with the Ministry of Environment and Forest for approval to set up 1 million tonne/year copper smelter.

While the company did not specify the purpose of setting up the venture, media outlets quotes unnamed sources saying that the copper smelter would feed into the company’s solar module manufacturing units.

Adani Enterprises had signed an agreement with SunEdison last year to set up $4 billion solar modules manufacturing unit in India. The facility would have been the largest of its kind in the country. Following financial troubles of SunEdison, Adani is reportedly looking for new partners but remains firm on its plans.

The company has extensive plans to set up module and related equipment manufacturing units taking advantage of the incentives provided by the government under the ‘Make In India’ program. The company plans to set up a manufacturing facility to produce 1000MWp/yr of Silicon Ingots/ wafers, Silicon Solar Cells, Modules along with 3000 MWp support manufacturing facilities that includes EVA, Back-sheet, Glass, Junction box and Solar cell and string interconnect ribbon in 3 phases.

The company had pledged to set up solar power capacity of 6 GW over the next few years and has won several utility-scale power projects through competitive auctions. The company recently commission part of the largest solar power project developed by one company in India. The company commissioned 360 MW capacity of the 648 MW planned solar power park in the southern state of Tamil Nadu.

India’s Adani Enterprises Wins Approval For 3 GW Solar Modules Factory

written by saurabh

Adani Enterprises recently won an initial approval to set up solar modules manufacturing facility in the western Indian state of Gujarat.

According to recent media reports, Adani Enterprises is planning to set up manufacturing facility to produce polysilicon, wafers, solar cells and modules. The company had last year signed an agreement with SunEdison to set up the largest solar module manufacturing facility in India. The two companies had agreed to invest $4 billion on the project.

SunEdison subsequently exited the project following failed negotiations. Adani Enterprises entered negotiations with Foxconn with no progress reported. The company is now reportedly going solo with the manufacturing facility which is expected to require an investment of $2 billion.

Work on the first phase of the facility is expected to start soon and with operations expected to start this year itself. The first phase will see annual production capacity of 1,200 MW cells and modules coming online. Production capacity will be increased to 3,000 MW per year after completion of the second phase. The facility will add polysilicon production upto 10,000 tonnes following the completion of third phase.

Modules manufactured at the facility are likely to be absorbed in the company’s own projects and may be sold to other developers in the country and even sold to other markets. Adani Enterprises signed an agreement with the government of Rajasthan to set up 10 GW solar power park. The company is reportedly in talks with SunEdison to buyout the latter’s solar power projects, operational and planned.

Adani Enterprises has participated and won projects in several solar power auctions and is expected to continue to do so in the future. As a result, ample capacity is expected to be available to absorb the modules manufactured at the facility.
