Tata Steel Commissions First Solar Project At An Iron Ore Mine In India

Tata Steel Commissions First Solar Project At An Iron Ore Mine In India

written by saurabh

India’s second largest steel maker Tata Steel recently commissioned the country’s first solar power project at an iron ore mine.

Tata Steel has commissioned a 3 megawatt solar power project at an iron ore mine in the state of Jharkhand. The solar power project, the first at an iron ore mine in India, will help Tata Steel replace a part of the electricity it consumes from the grid or diesel-based generators to power operations at the mine.

The project was commissioned jointly by Tata Steel, Tata Power Solar and Tata Power Trading Company – all part of the Tata industrial conglomerate. Power generated from the project will be purchased by Tata Steel at a fixed tariff. According to the information provided by the company in a press release, the mine currently draws electricity from the grid to carry out operations. In case the grid electricity is unavailable the company shifts to diesel-based power generators.

We have constantly looked at opportunities to exploit renewable energy sources. This is yet another milestone in our quest to become a sustainability driven company, committed to exploring clean energy solutions. Renewable energy is the best way of mitigating the impact of climate change,” said T V Narendran, Managing Director, Tata Steel India.

With the implementation of this solar power project the company will be able to offset at least a part of the fossil fuel-based electricity coming from the grid or being generated using diesel. Apart from the solar power project, the company has also installed several solar-powered lights. The site of the project has enough area to increase the project size to 4.5 megawatts.

Other metal companies in India are also looking to implement renewable energy projects to power their operations. Vedanta-owned Hindustan Zinc, the largest zinc producer in India, is planning to set up 115 megawatts solar power capacity for captive power consumption.

According to company officials, the capacity shall be set up in two phases – 15 megawatts and 100 megawatts. In the first phase, 10 megawatts capacity shall be set up near a smelter facility while a 5 megawatts project will be set up close to a zinc mine.

With the rapid fall in solar module prices it makes financial sense for these large energy-intensive companies to switch to solar power and reduce dependence on costlier grid electricity. Additionally, using solar power will also help them meet their renewable purchase obligation.

Tata Power Solar Doubles Module Production Capacity To 400 Megawatts

Tata Power Solar Doubles Module Production Capacity To 400 Megawatts

written by saurabh

One of the largest solar panel manufacturers in India has doubled it production capacity to 400 megawatts.

Tata Power Solar issued a press release stating that it has increased its solar panel production capacity from 200 megawatts to 400 megawatts. The company has also increased its solar cell production capacity from 180 megawatts to 300 megawatts.

The company is perhaps looking to expand its operations and capacity with an eye on the rapidly expanding Indian solar power market. The Indian government has set aside a substantial amount of capacity to be implemented using Indian solar panels.

The company will also look to export solar panels to other countries. Tata Power Solar recently became the first Indian manufacturer to ship 1 gigawatts of panels worldwide.

Tata Power Solar is rated tier-1 module manufacturer by BNEF. They have shipped 1 GW modules to over 30 countries, of which more than 60% was shipped in the last five years.

Tata Power Solar operates the largest solar power project in India that uses domestically manufactured solar panels. The 100 megawatts project is part of the Anantapur ultra mega solar power project. The project now has an installed capacity of 250 megawatts.

Tata Power Solar also holds the record of commissioning the world’s largest rooftop solar power project of 12 megawatts capacity.

Tata Power Solar, part of one of the most reputed industrial conglomerates, has achieved a significant milestone that no other Indian solar modules manufacturer had achieved.

Tata Power Solar recently announced that it became the first Indian manufacturer to have shipped out 1 gigawatts of solar power modules. The company has seen rapid expansion and growth in production as well as exports over the last few years.

Found in 1989 as Tata BP Solar, the company set up it first manufacturing unit in 1991 with a minuscule capacity of 3 megawatts. In 2000, the company achieved Rs 100 crore in sales and also became the first company to upgrade cell manufacturing with plasma-enhanced vapour deposition system. In 2001, the company achieved Rs 100 crore sales from exports which increased to Rs 300 crore in 2004.

Tata BP Solar increased solar cell manufacturing capacity to 52 megawatts in 2007 and to 84 megawatts in 2009. In 2011, Tata Power Solar became a subsidiary of the Tata Group, following the exit of BP from the joint venture.

After that, the company expanded its operations as well as EPC services rapidly to match the expansion in the Indian solar power market. In 2012, the company increased its module manufacturing capacity to 200 megawatts. It also commissioned the world’s largest rooftop solar power project of 12 megawatts capacity the same year.

Last year, the company commissioned a 100 megawatts solar PV project at NTPC’s Anantapur solar power park. The project is the largest solar power project to use Indian-made solar power modules.

Tata Power Solar remains one of the largest solar cell and module manufacturing companies in India. As on 31 December 2016, the company had solar cell production capacity of 300 megawatts and solar module manufacturing capacity of 400 megawatts.

Tata Power Solar Commissions India’s Largest Domestic Content Solar Power Project

Tata Power Solar Commissions India’s Largest Domestic Content Solar Power Project

written by saurabh

Indian solar module manufacturers may get a phycological boost as the country’s largest solar power project using Indian-made equipment was recently commissioned.

One of the Indian largest integrated solar companies, Tata Power Solar, a subsidiary of Tata Power has announced that it commissioned 100 MW solar project for NTPC in Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh.

In line with the Indian government’s Make-In-India initiative, project comprises of domestically manufactured solar cells and modules. This project has become the largest project to be commissioned under Domestic Content Requirement (DCR) category.

Project is built on a 500-acre site consisting of natural streams and hillocks which remain untouched during the project construction to maintain natural ecosystem. It is expected to generate nearly 160 million units (kWh) of energy and would help to offset approximately 110,000 tonnes of CO2 every year. It has also generated employment for 50 local people.

The project is part of the Anantapur ultra mega solar power project. The project now has an installed capacity of 250 MW. The second phase of the solar park will have 750 MW capacity; an additional 500 MW capacity shall come up at a different site within the state.

Tata Power Solar has delivered this project three months ahead of stipulated timelines. Project consists of innovative Balance-of-System (BoS) and cabling design along with optimised selection of evacuation infrastructure.

Tata Power Solar and NTPC have a strong track record of delivering projects in collaboration. Earlier, they have delivered 50 MW solar project using domestically made cells and modules in Rajgarh, Madhya Pradesh in 2014.

Till Now, Tata Power solar has commissioned over 250 MW of ground-mount utility scale projects across India.

One of the first projects auctioned by India’s largest power generating company – NTPC Limited – in its aggressive solar power drive has now commissioned, partially.

NTPC Limited has announced that power generation from 200 MW capacity, of the total 250 MW auctioned last year for the Anantapurum solar power park in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The project is planned to have a total capacity of 1.5 GW spread across two sites within the Anantapurum district.

Phase 1 of the solar park will have 250 MW capacity, the second phase will have 750 MW capacity. Both the phases will be located at Kunta. The balance 500 MW capacity shall come up at Galiveedu.

Last year, Tata Power Solar was awarded 100 MW capacity while Lanco Solar, BHEL and Sterling and Wilson were awarded 50 MW capacity each. 200 of this awarded capacity has been commissioned with 50 MW capacity is expected to be operational by October this year.

The solar power park is among the several similar projects being set up by NTPC Limited. The Indian government has launched an ultra mega solar power projects scheme that will see around 20 GW commissioned.
